Our SI practitioner training pathway is aligned with the UK Allied Health Profession professional bodies and government policies and frameworks around advanced practice.
This is the first of three modules that deliver a Postgraduate Certificate in Sensory Integration accredited by Sheffield Hallam University.
It will provide therapists and other related professionals with the underpinning neuroscience as well as sensory integration theory and evidence base, as relevant to applying sensory processing and integration principles to their practice.
It will introduce students to the sensory integration patterns of difficulty identified through research and will support students to develop hypotheses about these patterns, informed by neuroscience.
It will equip participants with the knowledge required to apply current SI theories to their everyday practice and begin to recognise the behaviours seen in sensory processing and integration difficulties.

Learning, Teaching and Assessment Task Summary
Theoretical material is introduced through online lectures or presentations, and developed and reinforced through directed reading and forum discussions.
Students will be:
- Encouraged to use online communication tools such as the forum group and forum coffee shop to deepen and broaden their learning, contribute to the sense of community, provide mutual support and to seek advice on specific issues from the lecturers.
- Expected to undertake self-directed study. This will be, in part, preparation for the assignment.
- Directed to read key texts, integrated into the core content of the lectures.
- Encouraged to participate actively in the module.
Students are assessed via online assessments which assess their knowledge and understanding of the neuroscience underpinning sensory integration difficulties as well as applying knowledge to behaviours and participation challenges. An assessment strategy common to all modules in this course requires students to write a short reflection on the learning achieved during this module and how this has impacted on their patient/client interaction.
Examine the complex relationship between neural organisation, functioning, and behaviour, across the lifespan as they relate to sensory processing and integration.
Develop hypotheses related to the potential underlying neuroscience explaining sensory integration patterns of difficulty. - Analyse the impact of proprioception strategies to facilitate positive change for a person with sensory processing and integration challenges.
Assessment Task information
40% online, open-book, multiple-choice questions with a one-hour time limit on the neuroscience of sensory processing from primary receptors to cortical interpretation.
Assessment Task period for Coursework 1: This assessment will be made available at the start of week 8 of the course. Once students log on they have an hour to complete it. Students must have completed the assessment task by the end of the 16th week from the start of the module.
60% Online clinical scenarios, across a range of client groups across the lifespan, are presented for critical evaluation, application of Ayres' sensory integration and evidence of current neuroscience knowledge and understanding and emerging clinical critical thinking.
This assessment task involves answering a set of short answer questions on two clinical scenarios.
- Scenario one: Students will select one scenario from four scenarios provided that relate to registration and modulation concepts within sensory integration.
- Scenario two: Students will select one scenario from four scenarios provided that relate to posture and praxis.
Students can complete the assessment task on scenarios one and two at any time within the given assessment period for coursework 2 (they will not need to complete both together in the same session). Once students log on to do each scenario, they have an hour to complete it.
Assessment Task period for coursework 2: This assessment task will be made available at the start of week 10 of the course. Once students log on to do a clinical scenario, they have an hour to complete it. Students do not need to complete both scenarios in the same session. Students must have completed the assessment (both scenarios) by the end of the 16th week from the start of the module.
Pass / Fail. As part of the assessment strategy in the School of Health Sciences, students will be expected to produce a short piece of work reflecting on the learning achieved and how this has impacted their patient/client interaction (500 words).

Which modules do I need to take to practise sensory integration therapy?
A Sensory Integration Practitioner will have been awarded the Postgraduate Certificate in Sensory Integration by completing and passing SI Modules 1, 2 and 3. An Advanced Sensory Integration Practitioner will have been awarded the Postgraduate Diploma in Sensory Integration by completing and passing SI Modules 1, 2, 3 and 4.
What will SI Module 1 allow me to do?
By the end of SI Module 1 course, you will have the necessary foundation knowledge of neuroscience and the theory of Ayres’ Sensory Integration (ASI) to allow you to identify behaviours and challenges that are likely to have a sensory underpinning. Understanding the sensory aspect supports your ability to frame to the client and stakeholders why clients respond to sensory input from the environment as they do.
This in turn potentially allows you to prioritise your clinical caseload more efficiently, and to be able to explain and advise settings as to what sensory supports need to be in place for a client to have the best chance of being able to benefit from the therapeutic interventions on offer. More importantly, you will have a toolbox of sensory-based strategies which you can start to put in place for the client straight away to potentially reduce the impact of their environment on their participation, and which you can use in conjunction with your current therapeutic approaches to improve participation.
Although we will introduce concepts around assessment and the formal diagnostic process, SI Module 1 is not an assessment or therapy course, and therefore you cannot refer to yourself as a Sensory Integration Practitioner until you have completed and passed all three Modules of Practitioner training (SI Module 1, 2, and 3).
Once you have completed and passed the course, you would be able to recognise sensory system involvement and advise around the impact on the person’s participation in life. However, you would not be able to give a formal diagnosis of sensory processing and integration difficulties, and a fully-qualified Sensory Integration Practitioner’s judgement would be considered essential to confirm or negate your hypotheses and should be sought through mentoring or supervision, in line with best practice.
Is it a 16 week period from the day that I register?
No, the start date is the first day of the advertised online course and the finish date is 16 weeks later. This allows us to ensure that students are supported adequately by an eMentor through the course.
Does it have online lectures that I can access at any time of the day?
Yes, there are no lectures in the traditional sense of the term, the course will include interactive material which will support your engagement with the material.
How long are the online lectures available?
The online material is available throughout the 16 week period so that you can go back and revise material whenever you would like.
Does it have online group activities/discussions?
The course will have the opportunity to engage with E-Mentors and others completing the course. This will all be done in your own time when you select to engage - you will be not expected to engage in online activities at the same time as others.
How do I provide structure / organise my study time over the weeks of the module?
Our aim is to make access to the content as flexible as possible for you so that you can study at a time and pace that suits you. All sections will be available to you at the start of the course. You should ensure you have 5 hours a week over the first 12 weeks to go through the content. In addition, you will need time for self-directed learning and preparation for the assessment. It is however up to you how you allocate your time (e.g. you could do 15 hours in one week and then less in the next two). Engaging with others who are studying the module and your eMentor is strongly encouraged, as online socialisation is an important part of keeping motivated as well as embedding your learning. So we recommend that you are in contact with your identified forum weekly (or let your peers know that you will be away) so that you get to know others studying the module and develop networks with others that will support you long after the module finishes.
What if I finish studying earlier than the 16 week period? Can I submit my essay?
The assessments will not be an essay. You can submit the assessments once you are fully prepared for the assessments. To that end, Coursework 1 and 2 will be available at the start of week 8. You should submit Coursework 3 once you have completed Coursework 1 and 2. All assessments will need to be completed by the end of the 16th week from the module start date. Results for the assessments will be provided three weeks after the module closes.
Will this course give me transferable, academic credits?
Yes, successful completion of this module yields 30 credits. UK university academic credits are globally recognised and highly transferable.
