Overview

Early trauma can have a significant impact on the development of the nervous system, which can then have lasting effects on sensory processing and attachments.

This course will allow participants to begin to consider the neurological underpinnings behind certain behavioural patterns commonly seen as a consequence of developmental trauma and therefore understand how simple sensory strategies can aid in the regulation of the nervous system.

Objectives

Aims of the course:

  • To become acquainted with the theory of Sensory integration (SI) and the functions of our sensory systems.
  • To consider SI as the foundation of learning and behaviour: to allow us to reframe behaviours and consider from an SI perspective.
  • To understand what we mean by developmental trauma and to understand the underlying neuroscience.
  • To understand how developmental trauma impacts the development of the nervous system and hence the consequential impact upon SI.
  • To understand what we mean by attachment and to begin to consider the impact of developmental trauma on attachment.
  • To consider the importance of attachment when using an SI approach with clients who have experienced developmental trauma.
  • To consider some simple strategies to support common SI difficulties arising from developmental trauma.

Who should attend this live online training day?

This course is aimed at those new to SI, trauma and / or attachment and is suitable for anyone who wants to gain a greater understanding of how trauma can impact a child’s sensory processing, behaviour, regulation,  ability to learn etc.

It is an introductory course and aims to bring all three areas of trauma, attachment and SI together. No prior knowledge is required, however, for those with some prior knowledge of trauma or attachment or SI but not in all three areas, it would be of interest. It would not be suitable for someone who has knowledge in all three areas.

The course is aimed at parents, foster carers, teachers, therapists, social workers and others working with children / young adults.
