Overview

As an autistic individual and Occupational Therapist, Rachael will utilise personal and professional experience alongside the latest research to explore interoceptive processing differences amongst the autistic population. 

This course will explore the impact that interoceptive processing differences can have on activities of daily life, social and emotional processing, and mental health. 

Implications for health and education professionals in relation to assessment and intervention will be discussed.


Objectives:

1.    Understand the prevalence and presentation of interoceptive processing differences in the autistic population. 

2.    Explore the connection between Interoception and:

  • Alexithymia
  • Self-Identity
  • Anxiety
  • Eating Disorders
  • Social Interaction
  • Sense of connectedness. 


3.    Identify the implications of interoceptive processing differences on assessment and intervention within healthcare and educational settings.

BSc, PGCE with QTS, PGCert Sensory Integration, MSc Occupational Therapy Rachael Thompson

Rachael is Head of Therapy at Cairn Education (www.cairneducation.co.uk) which is an alternative education provision in the UK that specialises in supporting young autistic individuals. Rachael has worked at independent specialist colleges for over 10 years in roles including Tutor, Occupational Therapist, Head of Education and Vice Principal.

Rachael is autistic and as part of her wider work regularly hosts webinars and workshops on autism and sensory processing. Rachael utilises both professional and personal insight to explore and explain the impact of sensory processing differences on physical and mental health, relationships and emotional regulation.
