About the assessment

The SOSI-M is a new nationally standardised assessment of sensory-based motor skills, based in Ayres Clinical Observations, and developed by well-regarded experts in sensory integration.

The SOSI-M includes 14 sets of administered items that assess proprioception, vestibular processing, motor planning, and postural control.

  1. Romberg (firm and soft surface, eyes open and closed)
  2. Heel to Toe (firm and soft surface, eyes open and closed)
  3. Standing on One Foot (eyes open and closed)
  4. Modified Postural Schilder’s Arm Extension Test
  5. Skipping
  6. Series of Jumps (jumping jacks; symmetric and reciprocal stride jumps)
  7. High Kneeling (right and left weight shift and reach)
  8. Antigravity Extension
  9. Antigravity Flexion
  10. Ocular Movements (vertical and horizontal)
  11. Slow Ramp Movements
  12. Sequential Finger Touching
  13. Diadochokinesis (right, left, and bilateral)
  14. Projected Actions in Time and Space (ball in the air and ball against the wall)


Comprehensive Observations of Proprioception (COP-R)

In conjunction with the SOSI-M, the COP-R, a behavioural observation tool, was developed to provide essential information about a child’s proprioceptive processing. The COP-R is comprised of 18 items and compares a child’s observed skills to typical children their age. This tool provides information about the motor and behavioural skills linked to proprioceptive processing. It is one of the first tools to provide a systematic way to measure proprioception in a clinical setting.

Professor Erna Imperatore Blanche

Erna Imperatore Blanche received her basic training in occupational therapy at the University of Chile (Santiago, Chile). She later earned her Master of Arts degree in Special Education at Columbia University and her Ph.D. in Occupational Science at the University of Southern California. Erna is an expert in pediatric occupational therapy and interventions based on occupational science.

She has co-authored several books, one standardized assessment, and one video series. She has also published numerous English and Spanish articles on sensory processing, autism spectrum disorder, play, and other issues related to clinical practice. Her articles have appeared in the American Journal of Occupational Therapy, Occupational Therapy International, Journal of Occupational Science, and Play and Culture Studies, among others, as well as in pediatric textbooks. Erna holds the position of Clinical Professor of Occupational Therapy at the Chan Division of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy, University of Southern California. She has lectured internationally in more than 30 countries. In addition, she maintains ties with Therapy West, Inc., a clinic she co-founded that serves more than 400 children per week. Dr. Blanche has received numerous international recognitions for her work with children.

Doctor Gustavo Reinoso

Gustavo Reinoso graduated as an occupational therapist in Argentina and completed his Ph.D. at Nova Southeastern University (NSU). He has been a clinician for +20 years assessing and treating children and youth with disabilities in a variety of government, clinical and community settings. He is an expert in sensory processing and regularly delivers education and services to clinicians and families in Europe, North America, Asia, Latin America, and the Caribbean. Dr. Reinoso’s research areas of interest include: sensory integration and processing, autism, development, children and youth and the development of assessment instruments. He has published peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, letters to the editor and training manuals. He is an Associate Professor at the Department of Occupational Therapy at Nova Southeastern University in Tampa, FL.

Dominique Blanche Kiefer

Dominique Blanche Kiefer is an occupational therapist based in California. Her paediatric clinic specialises in treating children with developmental disabilities, including Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, and Autism Spectrum Disorders.
