My Journey into Sensory Integration
I qualified as an OT in 2007 having been a primary school teacher for 23 years. I have subsequently worked as an OT in a college for young adults with a wide range of learning and physical disabilities.I was introduced to Sensory Integration when I attended a study day for challenging behaviour .The presenters used SI in their practice and demonstrated positive results in their client’s own homes and care facilities. I began studying SI in greater depth beginning with the module one in 2009.Once I had began to understand the theory behind this way of working I saw that it had tremendous potential to support the students at college and that sensory processing difficulties comprised a significant component of the barriers to learning and participation experienced by the students.
How I use SI in my practice
The students on my caseload have the most complex physical and learning disabilities. I work very closely with speech and language therapist and physiotherapists to develop the student’s sense of self , their relationship to others and the immediate environment. The development of body scheme through tactile and proprioceptive input is central to this.I work intensely with students who have sensory processing disorders which form significant barriers to their participation in all areas of daily life and can result in self harm and withdrawal. I do not have a sensory room but utilise equipment ,activities and experiences which will be available to the students once they have moved on from college. I capture these in a sensory passport which will go with them into the community.
Why I am committed to supporting others to study SI
I feel that my study of the theory and practice of Sensory Integration has enabled me to fully understand the needs of the students and to convey this to the wider college community. I present regular talks to the care and education staff on the importance of specific sensory inputs, praxis and the specific role of sensory processing difficulties with individuals with ASD .and this wider understanding has transformed approach to the curriculum for all students with sensory processing difficulties.
I have a passion for promoting the understanding of Ayres’ Sensory Integration and see the role of E mentor as an excellent opportunity to support participants to start along the Sensory Integration path and look forward to meeting and supporting new participants through module one.
