How We Help Neurodivergent and Disabled Postgraduate Students Thrive

Starting a postgraduate qualification is an exciting step, and it’s natural to want to know that the right support will be in place throughout your studies. At Sensory Integration Education, we want every learner to feel confident and equipped to succeed. That includes making sure you can access the right adjustments, and also helping you feel part of a learning community that understands your goals and challenges.
Whether you identify as neurodivergent, have a disability, long-term health condition, or specific learning difference such as dyslexia, there is a wide range of support available to help you succeed. Importantly, you don’t always need a formal diagnosis to access many of these options.
Below, we’ve outlined the types of support you can expect if you choose to study with us and Sheffield Hallam University (SHU), our academic partner.
Support Available Through Sheffield Hallam University
As an SIE postgraduate student, you can access SHU’s Disabled Student Support Service. Their Disability Advisers listen, guide, and help create a study experience that works for you.
You may be able to access a Learning Contract, which sets out reasonable adjustments tailored to your needs. These might include:

Extra time for coursework or assignments

Adaptations to presentations or group tasks

Marking that doesn’t penalise spelling or grammar
-
Other adjustments to help you participate fully
Student Support Advisers are there to talk through your situation and help you put the right measures in place.

How SIE Supports Your Online Learning
We’ve designed our online learning environment with flexibility and accessibility in mind, so you can engage with your studies in the way that works best for you. Features include:
- Optional Live Orientation to help navigate the learning platforms
- Closed captions on all video content
- Downloadable module materials, usually in Microsoft Word or PowerPoint
- Regular contact with eMentors
- Active discussion forums on our Student Hub, where students support one another
- Assessment drop-in sessions for guidance and reassurance
- Journal Club to support interpreting and using research
- Getting Up To Speed welcome course to help you prepare for returning to study
- Optional live events to interact with eMentors and peers
- Support from a Clinical Mentor, where applicable
Many students tell us that the sense of connection with peers and eMentors helps them stay motivated, on track, and confident. When challenges come up, having a community around you can make it easier to ask questions, share strategies, and celebrate progress.
If you ever feel unsure about the support you might need, your eMentor is a helpful starting point. They can talk things through, signpost your options, and help you feel part of the wider learning community.
How to Register for Support
When you enrol with SIE and SHU, you’ll be invited to declare any disabilities or additional learning needs. But if you didn’t do this during enrolment, that’s absolutely fine—you can contact SHU’s Disabled Student Support at any time. They’ll help you understand your options and arrange any support you’re entitled to.
