Jenny Quinn, OT and Advanced SI Practitioner, who completed her MSc in Sensory Integration with SIE, is launching a new children's book to help normalise knowledge and conversation about the full complement of our eight senses. (Scroll down for details of a free prize draw to win a copy!)

Sophie’s Superpower Senses* is an engaging, beautifully-illustrated story following siblings Sophie and Tom as they playfully learn about the lesser-known internal senses relating to body movement (proprioception); balance and motion (vestibular); and recognition of bodily functions and feelings (interoception).

We spoke with Jenny, a Clinical Lead Occupational Therapist, about this exciting new project:

"Just under two years ago, when my children were in reception and pre-school, I went online to order them a book to educate them on their eight senses. I had assumed (with sensory processing being such a big part of my life and career) there would be fictional books on the market targeted at educating children between 3 and 7 years old, but I wasn't able to find one. I have wondered if this is because the names and complexities of these additional senses have put people off? Or whether therapists have been more focused on writing literature for children with sensory processing problems because that's a lot of what we do. Subsequently, Sophie was born!"

The book is beautifully illustrated by Katherine Hobbs.

"Becoming an author was not a long-held ambition of mine but I have for a long time felt really passionate about all children understanding how their body works at a sensory level. I'm hoping the characters, Sophie and her brother Tom, spark conversation and interest. We are in such a privileged position as therapists to have this knowledge and see the difference it can make to children's and adults' lives....everyone should know about it! Children should be taught from EYFS upwards that they have eight senses, not five...we need it to be embedded within the national curriculum including how it can positively impact wellbeing and mental health."

"My ambition is for Sophie and Tom to become a part of a mainstream sensory revolution!"

Jenny added: "There will be a follow-up book out next year, with Tom as the lead character, aimed at KS2 children that explores the senses further and how they can be used for self-regulation, anxiety management etc."

Sophie's Superpower Senses is available in paperback on Amazon and as a Kindle ebook: https://amzn.to/3wZj2wm*
